This group is auditioned at the beginning of the year and rehearses before school. The King’s School Jazz Band work on classic Jazz repertoire as well as rock instrumentals. More of a big band style group, the Jazz Band perform at various events throughout the year. Forty boys are in the band this year as we look forward to working on band literature from Aretha Franklin to Chuck Berry.

Chapel Choir or Choristers are auditioned at the beginning of the year. The King’s School Choristers are renowned for outstanding choral work and perform at Sunday Services, in and around Auckland and for visiting groups.

The King’s School Honours Band is selected by the Director of Music. The selection process is based on the ability and attitude of the boys in music class. Our Honours music students meet together once a week from across the school levels, to work on more complex music literature. These boys are then part of the Honours Band Festival in Term 3 with students from other schools. The workshops and concerts are great fun and provide a much needed connection with other musicians.

The orchestra is a group of over 50 boys, and includes both string and wind players. The group works on performing a wide range of concert literature to a high standard, and ensures string players have an opportunity to also perform repertoire for large groups. Entry is by audition at the beginning of the year. The orchestra performs for school assemblies and at the annual Cathedral Concert.

Singers from years 2, 3 and 4 are invited to join this group as a training ground for the Chapel Choir. King’s Chorus perform at assemblies and Sunday services. Rehearsals are once a week and the chorus is an all comer’s choir.

King's String Group

The String Group is by invitation to string players in the school.

King’s School Rock Band is a small group of boys who accompany assembly singing. Instruments include, bass, electric guitar and drum kit. Boys are selected by the Director of Music for this group.

This group is for musicians who want to be involved in the school’s major production. This group are selected based on instruments required for the school shows each year. The Production Band aims to perform at a very high standard.

A brass quintet is a five-piece musical ensemble composed of brass instruments. The current instrumentation is two trumpets one trombone one euphonium and one tuba however this combination may change from year to year depending on the instruments available. As an ensemble type, the brass quintet is very flexible, with a repertoire encompassing a wide variety of musical genres. The Quintet is an auditioned group who rehearse once a week and perform at various events throughout the year.

The King’s Chamber Players is a small group of musicians who have demonstrated a very high level of skill and expertise on their instrument. Members are selected at the start of the year by audition, and may include both wind and string players. They study a wide variety of classical music with repertoire ranging from Handel to Gershwin. The Chamber Players perform regularly throughout the year at a variety of venues.
